#badgovernance protest enter day 2 as Videos Reveal Police Officer Killed by Fellow Officer in Katsina

On Friday, SaharaReporters released several videos depicting a police officer lying lifelessly in a pool of blood, having been shot by a fellow officer during a protest in Katsina State.

The videos were shared on X by user A.O. Yusuf, who criticized the incident as a serious lapse in police professionalism. Another user, Salako, lamented the situation, suggesting that the Nigerian Police Force is a major source of violence in the protests and implying that without the footage, officials might have falsely blamed the protesters.

The police have yet to issue an official response to the incident. SaharaReporters’ attempts to reach State Police Spokesman ASP Sadiq Aliyu for comments were unsuccessful, as he only responded with, β€œLet me call you back” without confirming or denying the event.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun had earlier expressed his concerns about the violence during the #EndBadGovernance protests, noting attacks on police stations, government buildings, and injuries to officers. He assured that the police are on high alert and ready to respond to any threats to public safety.

In reaction to the unrest, the Katsina State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma LGA and banned all gatherings and protests across the state. The government cited disruptions and property damage caused by some protesters as reasons for these measures.

State police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu refuted claims that officers fired live ammunition at protesters, asserting that the police handled the situation with maximum restraint and professionalism.
